I have seen so many articles about how great “Short Term 12” is that I decided to check it out. Brie Larson stars as Grace, a young woman working at a foster care facility with her boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr). Grace and Mason try their best to help kids struggling with a variety of issues while dealing with their own problems especially Grace who tries to come to terms with her past and the knowledge that she is pregnant.
I liked this movie from the first scene and became quickly invested in the characters’ lives. Grace is as emotionally scarred as the children she is in charge of. She pushes Mason away whenever he tries to get too close to her or asks her to open up to him. She develops a kinship with a withdrawn girl that comes to the facility for a while and this leads to Grace finally confronting her own haunting demons.
The only problem I had with the film was the ending which I felt was too contrived and in complete opposition to the movie entirely. I felt let down and confused by the ending which could have been so much better and as a viewer you want to feel a sense of some sort of resolution to these characters’ lives after becoming completely involved.
Actress Brie Larson had a breakthrough year in 2013 by starring in 3 well-received films: “Don Jon”, “The Spectacular Now” and “Short Term 12”. Her performances in all three are very different but seminal to each film. I am definitely interested in what roles she will choose in the coming years because I know she is on her way to becoming a force to reckon with. Her performance alone in “Short Term 12” showcase an actress that is unafraid of challenging roles.
