Recently I have been listening to a lot of alt-country band Lucero. This band came to my attention while watching “Shotgun Stories” starring Michael Shannon. Director Jeff Nichols is the brother of Ben Nichols the frontman for Lucero. Jeff included his brother’s music in the film and I instantly took a liking to it and purchased their records.
While listening to Lucero’s music I also discovered that Ben had released a solo album “The Last Pale Light in the West” which was inspired by Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” novel. The songs on the record correspond to the novel in that songs are named after characters from the novel and Ben actually sings events that happen in the book.
One of the best songs on the record is “The Kid” which is an acoustic song with Ben singing in his trademark growl while telling the story of the Kid from the novel. Check it out.
